노래의 제목 몰리 말론(Molly Malone)은 아일랜드의 궁핍한 시절을 상징하는 인물로

낮에는 거리에서 조개와 생선을 팔았으며 밤에는 매춘부로 몸을 팔았다는 이야기도 있다.

몰리 말론은 실존 인물이 아닌 그 당시 시대상황을 표현해주는

허구적인 인물이라는 의견이 대다수이다.

아일랜드의 수도 더블린 트리니티 대학교 앞에 동상으로도 세워져 있어
